1. WE HAVE RECEIVED THE FOLLOWING ANNOUNCEMENT: Call for Papers: Symposium: Castoriadis in Dialogue. Date: Friday, 28 November 2008. Venue: Monash University (Caulfield). Ten years after the death of Cornelius Castoriadis, the interdisciplinary significance of his thought remains largely unmined. His philosophical-political elucidations sought not only to interrogate the human sciences (from art to epistemology) but extended to the natural sciences as well (from auto-poiesis to mathematics). Melbourne has long been central for Castoriadis studies, and, in continuing that tradition, interested scholars are invited to submit abstracts in any area of Castoriadis' thought for in-depth presentation and discussion. Proposals that bring Castoriadis into dialogue with other thinkers and traditions are especially welcome. Please email abstracts to Suzi Adams by 10 June, 2008. 4. MESSAGE RECEVIED: Nordic Summer University Network Group 8: "Creation, Autonomy, Rationality" Call for papers. The Adventure of Modernity: Castoriadis Beyond Post-Modernism and Neo-Modernism. Winter Symposium at Akureyri University, Iceland March 7.-9. 2008. We invite interested researchers, students and activists to participate with papers concerning the subject of Castoriadis and modernity. Papers relating to other aspects of the work of Castoriadis are also welcome. Language: English, alternatively paper in a Nordic language with summary and presentation in English. 23. CASTORIADIS-VERANSTALTUNG IN WIEN. Nos es grato informarles sobre la aparición del pequeño volumen Democracia y relativismo, mismo que reúne dos debates que CC habría mantenido, en 1994, con el grupo que anima la Revue du MAUSS, en Francia. La referencia completa, así como los datos para adquirir copias del mismo, se encuentran a continuación, en el listado de la nueva bibliografía de Castoriadis. Una mención particular merece el hecho de que ese volumen -cuya coordinación de edición es de Juan Manuel Vera, cuyos materiales han sido traducidos por Margarita Díaz y que cuenta con una introducción por parte de Jean Louis Prat, integrante de dicho grupo-, es la culminación de un proyecto de buena voluntad. Dicho proyecto nació en el seno de un micro forum virtual de lectores de Castoriadis en castellano, en el que participamos además de Juan Manuel y Jean Louis, Jordi Torrent Bestit y un servidor. Dicho forum ha operado de facto, apoyando desinteresadamente y con gran entusiasmo a esta sección bibliografica de CC/AI, en los últimos cinco años. 31. ANNOUNCEMENT: NORDISK SOMMERUNIVERSITET Study Circle 8: "Creation, Autonomy, Rationality" Call for Papers: Bureaucratic Society and Autonomy Winter Symposium at Södertörn Högskola, Stockholm Sweden March 23.-25. 2007.
    "I pulled the string of bureaucratization and I kept on pulling", Cornelius Castoriadis once summarized his intellectual development. From the beginning of his career as a radical political thinker in post-war France, the phenomenon of a new bureaucratic society arising in Eastern and Western Europe stood at the centre of his investigations. A large part of his writings was dedicated to the analysis of the one-party states of the Eastern bloc. The rise of a new class, with a particular interest in the bureaucratic rule of states, parties and enterprises appeared as a main obstacle for the project of individual and collective autonomy. Castoriadis never stopped theorising over the problems of bureaucracy and autonomy, throughout his political, philosophical and psychoanalytical writings. To him, autonomy meant to consciously create one's own institutions, something which could never be combined with bureaucracy, as this meant institutionalized inequality, i.e. heteronomy. The only political influence vis-à-vis the workers that could be justified for Castoriadis, was one that served to increase their consciousness and their ability to govern themselves.
    Today, after the breakdown of the Soviet Union and the rise of what is known as global capitalism and global bureaucracies, we may ask whether Castoriadis analysis is still valid, or whether the project of autonomy faces new problems of a different kind. The problem of autonomy, its obstacles and possibilities needs to be scrutinised over and over again, from many different angles - political, sociological, philosophical, historical etc. Is the project of autonomy dead or doomed; or still viable in some form? What are its epistemological and metaphysical prerequisites?

33. ANNOUNCEMENT: A "Politics as a Struggle over People's Imagination" Conference is being organized in Florence, Italy at the European University Institute January 25-26, 2007. "Rationale: According to a common view, politics can be defined as the struggle for the distribution of power that can, as last resort, have recourse to (legitimate) physical force. The aim of this workshop is to question such a view, by showing that it today risks excluding too significant a part of the activities that we consider and experience everyday as political. To this end, the workshop proposes to explore the centrality of imagination and of the struggle that takes place through it for the establishment of a political imaginary. Indeed, it can be argued that, if power means the capacity to make somebody doing what he/she would not otherwise do, then whoever possesses the capacity to influence the others' images of the world has the greatest power. Political power is not only about controlling the means of coercion but, increasingly, about the possession of the means for interpretation. This does not mean that we are simply prey of the images of the world that are imposed through a top-down approach by the elites in power. Each society must rely on imagination but through imagination it can also come to question its own products and, therefore, itself. Following Castoriadis, we can say that imagination is not only radical because it is the fundamental activity that enables us to perceive of the world, but also because it can always potentially question its own products. To sum up, this workshop proposes to explore the possibility of defining politics as a struggle over people's imagination." 37. We have received word of the death of Murray Bookchin on July 30, 2006. Bookchin (b. January 14, 1921), a former Trotskyist like Castoriadis, shared Castoriadis's advocacy of direct democracy and even preceded the latter in his concern with environmental issues. Castoriadis discussed Bookchin's municipally-based, ecologically-informed, anarchist views briefly in Crossroads in the Labyrinth. They both joined the Editorial Advisory Board of Society & Nature in the 1990s. When Bookchin and his partner Janet Biehl resigned from this journal in 1997--considering it, among other things, too "Castoriadian"--Agora International's David Ames Curtis wrote a reply, "On the Bookchin/Biehl Resignations and the Creation of the New Liberatory Project," at Castoriadis's request and with his approval, the text appearing only a year and a half later in censored form in the successor journal, Democracy & Nature. It was on account of D&N's censorship effort that Castoriadis had determined to leave its Editorial Advisory Board as soon as the censored version appeared, a decision he was not able to carry out, however, due to his own intervening illness and death. Bookchin later wrote Curtis a conciliatory letter acknowledging that Castoriadis's views deserved further examination, but ill health and other priorities kept Bookchin from realizing his aim of writing such a text. 38. We have received word of the death of the historian and social activist Pierre Vidal-Naquet on July 29, 2006. Vidal-Naquet (b. July 23, 1930), a sympathizer of Socialisme ou Barbarie since the mid-1950s, formed a discussion group in the early 1960s with Castoriadis, Claude Lefort, Jean-Pierre Vernant and others called the "Cercle Saint-Just" (later renamed the "Centre de Recherches et d'Études Sociales et Politiques," or CRESP). It was Castoriadis who came to the defense of Vidal-Naquet in a 1979 polemic with Bernard-Henri Lévy--with Castoriadis's contribution now available as "The Vacuum Industry" in The Rising Tide of Insignificancy (The Big Sleep). And it was Vidal-Naquet who soon thereafter introduced Castoriadis for his election to the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales. Castoriadis joined Clisthène l'Athénien authors Vidal-Naquet and Pierre Lévêque at a March 27, 1992 Georges Pompidou Center meeting instigated by Agora International, organized by Stephane Barbery, David Ames Curtis, Clara Gibson Maxwell, and Pascal Vernay, and moderated by Christian Descamps of the Espace Séminaire Philosophie on the occasion of the two-thousand-five-hundredth anniversary of Cleisthenes' reforms in ancient Athens. Vidal-Naquet's oration at Castoriadis's funeral on January 3, 1998 later appeared in translation as his "Homage to Cornelius Castoriadis" in the review Common Knowledge.

Im Vordergrund der Aktivitäten steht zunächst das Publikationsprojekt Cornelius Castoriadis: Ausgewählte Schriften. Auf mehrere Bände angelegt, soll es die wichtigsten noch nicht übersetzten Texte von Castoriadis auf Deutsch zugänglich machen. Der erste Band der Ausgewählten Schriften, von Michael Halfbrodt und Harald Wolf ediert, wird voraussichtlich im Sommer 2006 unter dem Titel "Autonomie oder Barbarei" im Verlag Edition AV erscheinen.     The "Verein für das Studium und die Förderung der Autonomie" (Association for the Study and the Furthering of Autonomy; VSFA) was founded in February 2006 to improve the reception of and the debate around the works of Cornelius Castoriadis in the German speaking world and to further the project of autonomy theoretically and practically alike. For the moment, special emphasis is placed on the publication project Cornelius Castoriadis: Ausgewählte Schriften ("Selected Writings"). 48. NOUS AVONS REÇU L'ANNONCE SUIVANTE:
    Nous sommes un groupe d'individus d'origines diverses qui suivent la trajectoire politique et philosophique de Cornelius Castoriadis depuis plusieurs années. Le groupe se réunit régulièrement afin de discuter autour de l'oeuvre de Castoriadis (oeuvre qui a été étudiée par nous en tant qu'écrivains, étudiants, traducteurs, militants, etc.) et sur les questions qu'elle nous pose notamment celle du projet d'autonomie et de la démocratie directe. Certains d'entre nous, ayant déjà essayé d'introduire des idées de Castoriadis au sein des organisations militantes et universitaires ont envie de se réunir avec d'autres personnes afin de mieux poursuivre ces efforts.
    Nous nous proposons cinq éventuelles pistes à explorer:
    1 - Constituer une plate-forme d'échanges à partir des idées développées par Castoriadis.
    2 - Proposer des interventions auprès des collectifs militants.
    3 - Réorganiser (par thèmes, disciplines, etc.) les textes de Castoriadis. (Il s'agirait de "casser" la disposition de ses écrits en différents volumes et de les agencer dans des perspectives d'initiation et de travail.)
    4 - Confronter la pensée de Castoriadis à d'autres auteurs contemporains.
    5 - Editer des tracts.

    Dans Sujet et vérité dans le monde social-historique (qui reprend les séminaires donnés à l'EHESS en 1986 et 1987), Castoriadis affirme que : "le monde humain est caractérisé dès le départ par quelque chose qui crée un abîme avec la naturalité et l'animalité - quels que soient par ailleurs les rapports qu'il entretient avec celles-ci -, c'est-à-dire l'apparition chez les humains de l'imaginaire aussi bien au niveau de l'être humain singulier (imagination) qu'au niveau social (imaginaire social ou imaginaire instituant)". Ces journées d'étude voudraient explorer, à la suite de Castoriadis, ce champ de l'imaginaire dans une perspective radicalement interdisciplinaire, faisant droit à ses dimensions philosophiques (anthropologiques), historiques, sociologiques, juridiques, politologiques, économiques et psychanalytiques. La notion d'imaginaire instituant est au centre de notre réflexion, et c'est elle que nous voulons mettre en évidence dans ces croisements interdisciplinaires. Ainsi, nous espérons faire de ces journées une contribution à, une nouvelle philosophie de l'imaginaire, fondée sur l'ambivalence du couple imagination/imaginaire. Mais nous nous efforcerons aussi de montrer la fécondité possible de cette pensée de l'imaginaire dans le champ de la philosophie de l'art et de la littérature, en montrant comment l'\234uvre littéraire participe de la dynamique d'auto-altération des magmas de significations imaginaires et ainsi contribue à l'invention de l'histoire.

    13, 20 janvier, 3 et 17 février, 2 et 16 mars 2004. 17h30 à 19h30.
    Objectifs: Sur la base d'une réflexion théorique approfondie, comprendre la portée sur sa propre pratique de trois vécues: l'appartenance, l'autonomie et la haine de l'autre. Acquérir donc des instruments conceptuels provenant de multiples disciplines et les pratiques nécessaires, pour avoir une approche de base solide des phénomènes tels que le racisme, la misogynie, l'intolérance, le harcèlement, le nationalisme, les discriminations par genre, la violence contre la femme et les minorités, entre autres.
    Contenu:
    Les racines psychiques de la haine: état originaire de la psyché et sens comme clôture; imaginaire radical et schéma de toute puissance; processus de socialisation et individu social comme signification imaginaire sociale. Toute puissance et répétition, toute puissance de l'autre.
    Les racines sociales de la haine: la \253réponse\273 aux questions fondamentales de toute société; a-temporalité et institution sociale; histoire comme création et totémisme archaïque; le transfert \253à cent pour cent\273 et le contenu hétéronome de signification imaginaire sociale dans les sociétés religieuses. Instance extra-sociale de l'institution et clôture comme sens. Meta-norme et altérité.
    Autonomie vs. Hétéronomie. Autonomie comme explicitation de l'auto-institution de la société, premier abord. Haine, guerre et répétition. De la haine psychique de soi \253comme autre\273 à la haine de l'autre réel. Le pour-soi et ses dimensions. L'échec perpétuel du transfert absolu et l'imaginaire radicale comme source de création de nouvelles formes. Les professions impossibles face aux totalitarismes et à la guerre.

    Cornelius Castoriadis (1922-1997) fundó juntamente con Claude Lefort, Edgar Morin i François Lyotard la revista de pensamiento Socialisme ou barbarie, en la que se criticaba tanto el capitalismo como el comunismo de los años de la guerra fría. A partir de su libro La institución imaginaria de la sociedad profundizó en la idea del imaginario radical que forma la dimensión instituyente de la sociedad instituida que es capaz de transformarla en un sentido emancipador. Desde la perspectiva histórica-social, sus análisis abarcan campos tan diversos como la antropología, el psicoanálisis, el arte o la ciencia. En el contexto actual de pax americana y guerra permanente, urge el volver a plantearse críticamente los anhelos y posibilidades prácticas del proyecto de autonomía individual y colectiva.
